Pre-Flight Setup

A little setup now saves a lot of confusion later — two separate browser sessions means you and your son never accidentally sign each other out mid-test.

Open a private/incognito window. Call it "Browser 1: You." ✅ Expect: a clean slate — no cached session, no apex_dev_user override. Open a second, separate private/incognito window — or better, a different browser entirely (e.g. Safari if Browser 1 is Chrome). Call it "Browser 2: Your Son." ✅ Expect: two independent sessions that won't sign each other out. Confirm your son can get to his @waukeeschools.org inbox during testing — Part B needs him to click a real magic-link email. Open the backend Spreadsheet in a third tab. Keep the users, magic_links, and rosters sheets one click away — you'll peek at them a few times. Bookmark this checklist (or just keep this tab open). ✅ Expect: your checkmarks and notes save automatically — close and reopen across days without losing progress.

Sign In As Yourself

The magic-link flow replaced Google OAuth entirely this session. This is the first time it's been tested on the live deploy — let's make sure your returning-instructor path is rock solid.

In Browser 1, go to index.html and enter rgoerend@waukeeschools.org. Request a magic link. ✅ Expect: a confirmation message, no "domain not allowed" error. Check your inbox. ✅ Expect: an email from rgoerend@waukeeschools.org arrives within about a minute, with a link to auth-callback.html?token=... Click the link. ✅ Expect: a brief "verifying…" moment, then landing on Dashboard.html — OR, if this is genuinely your first-ever magic-link sign-in, landing on the onboarding screen (name + course picker). If that happens, fill it in like Step B2 describes and carry on — same code path. ⚠️ Watch for: if you land on onboarding and your name/courses already existed before, your users row may have gotten reset — worth a peek at the sheet. Once on Dashboard, confirm your name appears in the top-right of the nav, and the Portfolio dropdown lists S1–S5. Close the tab completely, then reopen index.html in the same Browser 1 window. ✅ Expect: you're still signed in — lands straight on Dashboard, no re-entering your email (apex_auth_v2 session, ~75 days).

Dashboard & Quick Links

The new "🚀 Getting Started Guide" Quick Link is the headline feature of this round — confirm it's there and works for an existing user, not just brand-new ones.

Confirm your course name/abbreviation shows correctly in the dashboard header. Confirm all five Standard progress cards render — S1 through S5 — each in its own color (green, blue, violet, amber, red). Find the Quick Links panel. ✅ Expect: "🚀 Getting Started Guide" appears as one of the default links — brand new this session. Click "Getting Started Guide." ✅ Expect: opens GettingStarted.html in a new tab. Click the "WILC Slack" and "Google Drive" Quick Links too. ✅ Expect: each opens the right destination in a new tab. If the UI supports it, reorder your Quick Links, then refresh the page. ✅ Expect: your new order sticks. Add a custom Quick Link (any URL), confirm it appears, then remove it. ✅ Expect: clean add/remove, doesn't disturb the built-in links.

Standard Pages Spin-Through

Nothing about the kanban/phase engines changed this session, but the artifact-card link field did — the old upload button is gone, replaced by a plain link field. Make sure every Standard page still loads and saves cleanly.

Open Standard1.html (S1 — Servant Leadership). ✅ Expect: your kanban board loads with whatever cards/state you already had. Move a card to a different status column, then refresh the page. ✅ Expect: the new status sticks. Open an artifact card with an empty link field. ✅ Expect: the field shows the placeholder "Paste a link to your file or folder…" — not an upload button (that's been removed). Repeat a quick pass on Standard2.html and Standard5.html — same kanban interactions, same expectations. Open your course's S3 and S4 pages (the nav points to the right variant automatically). ✅ Expect: for DCS this is the phase-based "Career Exploration" / "Technical Skills" guided process — phases unlock in order, and the current phase is clearly highlighted. Bonus (optional): if you also teach BSU, sign in as (or temporarily configure) a BSU-enrolled user and confirm the Portfolio dropdown's S4 link points to Standard4-BSU.html instead of Standard4.html — that's the fixS4Link() patch in mobile-nav.js, and DCS alone won't exercise it.

Real Artifact: Drive → Share Link → Card

This is the actual new workflow that replaced drag-and-drop upload. Do it for real, the way GettingStarted.html's "00" section teaches — that way you can speak from experience when your son does the same thing in Part B.

In Google Drive, create a new folder — something like "APEX Portfolio — Russ (TEST)." Create or upload one test file inside it (a Google Doc is easiest). Right-click the file → Share → change "General access" to "Anyone with the link." ⚠️ Watch for: Drive files are private by default — skip this and the link will look fine but won't open for anyone else, including you reviewing it later as instructor. Copy the link. Go to any Standard page, open an artifact card, and paste the link into the link field. Write a short reflection and change the card's status. Save, then refresh the page. ✅ Expect: the link, reflection, and status all persisted — confirms it saved to the backend Sheet, not just browser localStorage. Go back to Dashboard. ✅ Expect: that Standard's progress bar/count reflects the status change. Open the saved link in a fresh private window (signed out of everything). ✅ Expect: it opens without asking for permission — proof "Anyone with the link" sharing actually took effect.

Check-In & Up Next

Click the Check-In button in the nav. ✅ Expect: Checkin.html opens with a form for today's entry. Fill out the check-in — what you worked on, what's next — and optionally link it to the artifact card from A4. Submit. ✅ Expect: a confirmation, and the entry shows up on your Dashboard's recent check-ins. On a Standard page, find the "Up Next" feature and add a card to it. Open the Up Next list/sidebar. ✅ Expect: the card you added is there. Remove it. ✅ Expect: it disappears cleanly, no leftover ghost entries.

Review Prep

Open ReviewPrep.html. ✅ Expect: a cross-standard summary that includes the artifact you updated in A4. Try any self-rating, goal-setting, or reflection fields. ✅ Expect: saves and reloads correctly. Try "Copy Text" or print, if available. ✅ Expect: produces a clean, readable summary you'd actually hand to someone.

Instructor Tools

The "Enter Associate View" phantom-row bug was fixed in both apex-kanban-v2.js and APPS_SCRIPT.js this session. This is the first chance to confirm the fix survived the redeploy.

Open instructor/dashboard.html. ✅ Expect: your roster loads (it'll be light until Part B adds your son). Confirm the progress heatmap renders without console errors, even with little data yet. Find and click "Enter Associate View." ✅ Expect: the UI switches to look like a student-associate's view, and the course guard doesn't bounce you back to index.html. Click around a bit in Associate View — open a Standard page, an artifact card. Exit Associate View back to the instructor dashboard. Critical check: open the Spreadsheet's users and rosters sheets. ✅ Expect: NO row with id "instructor-preview" anywhere — confirms the fix held through redeploy.

Mobile & iPad

On your phone (or a desktop browser resized to ~375px), open Dashboard.html. ✅ Expect: the desktop nav links hide and a ☰ hamburger button appears. Tap the hamburger. ✅ Expect: a slide-in drawer opens listing Dashboard, a "Portfolio" section with S1–S5, Review Prep, and a Check-In button pinned at the bottom. Tap a link inside the drawer. ✅ Expect: it navigates correctly and the drawer closes behind it. Open GettingStarted.html at the same narrow width. ✅ Expect: the two-column sections collapse into a single column (700px breakpoint) and stay readable — including the new "00 Get Your Files Ready" section's Drive mockup. If you're on an iPad or iPhone in Safari (not already added to your Home Screen), confirm the purple "📲 Add to Home Screen" banner appears at the bottom. Dismiss it. ✅ Expect: it doesn't come back on the next page load (apex_a2hs_dismissed).

This is the moment the whole "00 — Get Your Files Ready" section and the new onboarding redirect were built for: a real person, with no prior account, signing in for the first time.

(Optional) Before he starts, check the users sheet for his email. Confirming it's not already there means you're testing the true first-time path. In Browser 2, go to index.html. Have him enter his @waukeeschools.org email and request a magic link. ✅ Expect: same success message as A1, no domain error. He checks his inbox. ✅ Expect: the email arrives with the same sender and link format. He clicks the link. ✅ Expect: a "verifying…" moment, then landing on index.html's onboarding screen — NOT the Dashboard — with a name field and course picker both visible (his profile has no name yet, so this branch should trigger).

Onboarding → Getting Started

This is the new routing built this session — finishOnboarding() now sends brand-new users to the tutorial instead of straight to an empty Dashboard.

He types his name into the name field. He picks his course in the course picker. He submits / clicks to continue. ✅ Expect: he lands on GettingStarted.html — NOT Dashboard.html. This is the new behavior built this session. Peek at the users sheet. ✅ Expect: a new row for his email — name filled in, role = student-associate, course_ids set to what he picked. Peek at the rosters sheet. ✅ Expect: a new row linking him to you as his instructor for that course.

The Getting Started Tour

Nine stops — "00 Your Files" through "08 Review Prep." This is also the test of the scroll-margin-top fix made this session: every jump-nav link should land its target heading below the fixed nav, not behind it.

Confirm the nav renders fully — logo, Dashboard link, Portfolio dropdown, Review Prep, Check-In button, and his name in the top right. Click each link in the header nav, in order: "00 Your Files" through "08 Review Prep" — nine stops total. For each one, confirm the section heading lands clearly below the fixed top nav — not hidden behind it. ⚠️ Watch for: a heading half-covered by the purple nav bar is a regression of the scroll-margin-top fix made this session. Read through "00 — Get Your Files Ready" together. ✅ Expect: it should make sense as someone's very first read — creating a Drive folder, sharing a file, pasting the link. Skim sections 01–08. ✅ Expect: every mockup/screenshot renders, no broken images, no oddly-styled blocks. Scroll to the footer and click "Open the Portfolio →." ✅ Expect: lands on Dashboard.html.

Same workflow as A4, but this time it's the first artifact a real student-associate has ever saved. If anything about the link-paste flow is confusing without your help, that's useful signal too.

Open S1 (Standard1.html). ✅ Expect: a fresh, empty kanban board — no leftover data from anyone else. Open an artifact card. ✅ Expect: the link field placeholder reads "Paste a link to your file or folder…" Have him do the real Drive workflow himself, following GettingStarted's "00" section: create his own Drive folder, share a test file ("Anyone with the link"), copy the link, paste it into a card, write a reflection, and set a status. Save, then refresh. ✅ Expect: everything persists. Check his Dashboard. ✅ Expect: that Standard's progress updates. Do a quick pass through S2, his course's S3/S4, and S5. ✅ Expect: each loads cleanly — no redirect loops, no console errors, no course-guard bounce back to index.html.

If he has an iPhone/iPad, confirm the "Add to Home Screen" banner appears, and dismissing it sticks.

Auth Edge Cases

Request a magic link, then immediately request another one for the same email. ✅ Expect: a cooldown message (60 seconds) — not two separate emails. Click a magic link a second time after you've already used it once. ✅ Expect: a graceful "this link has already been used" (or similar) error — not a blank page or crash. Try requesting a magic link with a non-@waukeeschools.org email (a personal Gmail, for instance). ✅ Expect: a clear rejection message — the domain allowlist holds. While signed out, navigate straight to a deep link like Standard1.html. ✅ Expect: redirected to index.html; after signing back in, you land back on Standard1.html (the apex_login_dest round trip). (Optional, ~15 min of waiting) Request a link, wait at least 15 minutes, then click it. ✅ Expect: an "expired" error, not a crash.

Data Sanity Check

The last sweep — close every tab and just look at the data the last two days of testing produced.

Scan the users sheet for anything unexpected — duplicate rows for the same email, stray test accounts, blank required fields. Scan magic_links — old used/expired tokens are normal, but confirm there's nothing that looks like an error or malformed row. Scan rosters — should contain just you and your son (plus any pre-existing real rows), with no "instructor-preview" entries anywhere. Spot-check that the artifact link, reflection, and status you and your son each saved (A4 and B5) are visible in their respective sheet rows — not just in the UI.
